My biggest struggle is everything. I know that is generic but, I think my biggest struggle is everything because I am not sure how to start my thing. I am afraid of doing as I have kids to support and so on. But I don’t want life to pass me by without having given having my own business a try. My dream is to have my own studio.
I think that this is a fear holding many people back. They have responsibilities which they must prioritise, but feel unfulfilled by giving all their time and energy to someone else.
My advice is for you to give it a go, but give yourself the best chance of succeeding. If you try and fail, the chances are that you won't try again. The question of 'what if?' will eat away at you and even if you fail, the lessons learned will be invaluable for future endeavors.
It is far better to have tried and failed, than to have not tried at all.
Another aspect that is often overlooked that I picked up from the Snapchat Story of Sarah Nee of Blissberry Design was the importance of being a role model to your children. If you want them to be bold, confident and hard working, then you need to inspire them with your own confidence, hard work and determination.
If you go for it, you'll be happier and therefore a better person for your family. If you have regret, you'll become bitter and resentful. This inner frustration will build up and you'll not be much fun to be around.
Someone once said to me that to have a successful marriage you must spend 1/3 of your time on your partner, 1/3 of the time on your relationship and 1/3 of the time on yourself.
Being your own person and feeling fulfilled will make you a better husband/wife.
"Fail to prepare. Prepare to fail"
So, how can you do this?
If you are to be successful most important factor is achieving that success preparation. You will need to give yourself a solid foundation from which to launch yourself and your business. These are the main factors that will help you.
Time is what you will have to find and somehow Time is also something you will need to make more of. You have kids and a family to support, so you will have to work around them. Depending on their age, you should have time before the get up (5am-7am), while they are at school (9am - 3pm) and when they are in bed (8pm - 11pm). It is during these periods that you can get your work done.
This may sound tough, but it is possible as this is what I had to do whilst I was running the family hotel, with my 2 kids and still finding time to do freelance work.
Plan what you are going to do in advance. Explain to those around you why important it is and that you are left alone to focus on your work.
Try to make more of your time by improving yourself whilst doing other activities - listen to audiobooks and podcasts in the car or whilst exercising for example. If you have a family and work a job, your time will be limited even more. But this is where part 2 - Money comes in.
In order to fund your dream business, you will need to be able to have enough money to last you for at least 6 months. This is essential so that when you are ready to quit your job, you have the time you need to focus on your business, knowing that the bills are covered.
If you don't do this, you'll end up in a scarcity mindset, taking on work you hate just to pay the bills, which takes you away from building your business.
Be disciplined, work hard and save. Then and only then, launch into building your business.
How much do you know about the industry you want to be going into? How can you educate yourself or improve your technical skills before you take the plunge? Whilst juggling home life, use your other time chunks you've allocated to educate yourself. Take online classes, watch video tutorials and read up the latest news.
Again, you want to be as strong and as capable as possible when you finally start. If your skills and knowledge is up to date, you'll have a much better chance of succeeding.
Having a good set of connections will help your business, as the more people who are aware of what you do, the better chance you have of securing work.
Networking will also improve your confidence at meeting and engaging with clients. People want to work with someone they like, so the more conversations you have, the better chance you have of picking up clients.
The often overlooked part is that not everyone needs your service, but they may know someone who does. When that person's situation or a situation of their friend changes, they will recommend you. But this is only if you stay top of mind and so regular meet ups are a perfect informal way of doing this.
For example, if you were a wedding photographer and I'm not engaged I wont' need your services. But if a friend of mine is getting married I may recommend you. If I suddenly get engaged, then I will need your services.
Its not always what you know, but who you know. We all can use the help of an experienced mentor who has been there before and had success. You can reap the benefits of their years of experience.
But how do you meet a possible mentor?
Mentors come from networking, either directly or through a referral. They will help give you professional guidance and advice that could be the difference between whether or not your business succeeds.
As always, you will need to respect their time, be likeable and offer something of value.
To sum up:
This won't be easy, but if you can be disciplined, organised (something mums are great at!) and build a solid foundation, then you have a far better chance of success. Build a cash reserve, hone your skills, boost your network and go for it!
You owe to your family and yourself to live your dream.
